What are Drill Bits?
Drill bits are cutting tools which are held in a drill for creating cylindrical holes. The bit is attached to drill which rotates it and provides the torque and axial force necessary for creating holes on various surfaces like wood, glass, stones, tile, metal, etc. There are various types of drill bits available on the market which is specialized for creating cylindrical and non-cylindrical holes.
Some of the Drill Bit Types Include:
- Metal
- Spade
- Masonry
- Glass
- Twist
Of the various types of drill bits available, twist drill bits are produced in large quantity and are available in the widest choice of tooling materials for drilling holes in wood, plastic and metal. The point angle of the most common twist drill bit is 118 degrees which is best suited for a wide range of drilling tasks.
To get the best results out of a drill bit its cutting edges need to be sharpened periodically. Generally drill bits are inexpensive due to which users replace them with newer ones but bits which are expensive and designed for drilling particular material are sharpened by special grinding jigs. Similarly, special grinding tools are also available for sharpening or reshaping the cutting surfaces of drill bits.
